District Procedures for Unannounced School Visits
[Kenosha Unified School District] We know that recent events have caused uncertainty and distress for many in our community. We want to remind you that the District worked with legal counsel to establish internal guidelines to prepare school leaders to respond to unannounced visits by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or cooperating law enforcement agencies.Below are a few key points for awareness:
- KUSD does not collect or maintain immigration records for our students. Therefore, the District cannot and will not share this information with any requesting agency.
- Visitors are allowed into public areas, but may not access private areas without permission, consistent with Policy 1600 – Visitors and Policy 3622 – Access to Buildings and Grounds.
- Public areas include parking lots and spaces used for after-school activities (e.g., field house, auditorium, gymnasium).
- Private areas include classrooms, hallways, cafeterias and other building spaces during the school day.
- Building administrators have been given steps to follow if law enforcement visits a school, and staff have been provided with guidance on how to respond. Policy 1600 – Visitors, Policy 3622 – Access to Buildings and Grounds, and District procedures will be followed to ensure minimal disruption to the learning environment.
By planning and providing clear guidance, we are reinforcing our commitment to maintaining a safe, supportive environment where all students can learn and thrive. If you have questions, please contact your building administrator.
Thank you for all that you do to support KUSD.
Thank you,
Dr. Weiss
KUSD Superintendent of Schools
