SUMMARY:Taking a Faithful Stand for Equity Statewide Call
DESCRIPTION:Taking a Faithful Stand for Equity resumes meeting this month with a two-part series on Wisconsin’s curriculum requirement on American Indian studies. Our next meeting is This Wednesday\, August 16 at 6:30 pm. on Zoom.   REGISTER HERE.\n\nTwice in grades K-8 and once in grades 9 to 12\, school boards are required to include in the social studies curriculum instruction in the history\, culture\, and tribal sovereignty of the federally recognized American Indian tribes and bands located in Wisconsin. A legislative study committee has introduced a bill this session (Assembly Bill 209/Senate Bill 198) that would require incorporating American Indian studies into the state model academic standards\, and require the Department of Public Instruction to develop informational materials about the requirement for distribution to school boards\, administrators\, teachers\, etc. It would also modify the related requirements for teaching licenses.\n\nOn Wednesday August 16\, we will hear from Brian Ward\, an educator and activist who lives in Teejope (occupied Ho-Chunk Land known as Madison\, Wisconsin)\, and has lived and worked on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation\, home of the Oglala Lakota Nation. He has also worked with Indigenous people in Guatemala and Peru. His master’s thesis work focused on the representation of Indigenous people in K-12 classrooms with a look at the broader societal influence and the solutions states have attempted to remedy these issues. He contributed to the book 101 Changemakers: Rebels and Radicals Who Changed U.S. History and his writing focusing on Indigenous and environmental issues has appeared in The Nation\, Truthout\, New Politics\, Science for the People\, and more. See a list of Indigenous Education Resources from Brian here.\n\nOn Tuesday September 12\, our presenter will be David O’Connor\, a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa (Ojibwe) in northern Wisconsin. In January 2012\, he became the American Indian Studies Consultant at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). In David’s role at DPI\, he supports school districts’ efforts to provide instruction on the history\, culture and tribal sovereignty of Wisconsin’s American Indian nations and tribal communities\, often referenced as Wisconsin Act 31\, and the education of Native American students.  (Additional information and the link to register will be sent later\, before the Sept. 12 meeting.)\n\nWe hope to see you at both of these meetings!\n\nRegister for the Wednesday\, August 16 meeting (6:30 pm. on Zoom) HERE.

SUMMARY:Taking a Faithful Stand for Equity Statewide Call
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of Taking a Faithful Stand for Equity will be Tuesday\, June 13\, at 6:30 pm on Zoom.  If you haven’t already\, registered\, please email Lori Hawkins at lhawkins@cushkenosha.com and ask for access to the zoom registration.\n\nOur topic will be current proposals for reforming shared revenue — funding that flows from the state to local governments.  It is a complicated issue but one that we all need to understand\, because these proposals would have an enormous impact on our communities and our efforts to advance racial equity.\n\nWe will be joined by Philip Rocco\, Associate Professor of Political Science at Marquette University\, and Dr. Cassandra Bowers\, Executive Director of All In Wisconsin.\n\nProf. Rocco has written extensively on the shared revenue proposals from both Governor Evers and Republican legislators for The Recombobulation Area.  You can read his analysis at: What we talk about when we talk about shared revenue (which has links to his earlier columns on the version of the shared revenue bill passed by the Assembly and comparing Gov. Evers’ and the GOP proposals).\n\nDr. Bowers will share All In Wisconsin’s messaging and narrative around how the GOP proposal would hurt and scapegoat Milwaukee\, especially Black and Brown residents\, and that it isn’t a plan to increase the services and resources our families need but yet another backdoor ploy to fund police departments and take away local control. (See the attached messaging guide).\n\nWhatever the status of the legislation is at the time we meet\, we’ll have suggestions for actions you can take.\n\nPlease join us!\nOn behalf of the Taking a Faithful Stand for Equity cosponsors: \n\nInterfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee\nMICAH\nWisconsin Council of Churches\nWisconsin Council of Rabbis\nWisconsin Faith Voices for Justice\nWISDOM\n\n  \nTo receive CUSH emails\, sign up HERE.

SUMMARY:Getting Acquainted (or Re-Acquainted) with Wisdom and our Affiliates (like CUSH!)
DESCRIPTION:Whether you are new to CUSH because you attended Madison Action Day or have joined a new task force\, a dyed-in the wool supporter since day one\, or somewhere in between\,  \nthis Wisdom interactive online event is for you! \nSocial justice organizations like CUSH are only as successful in their work if we are engaging our members and volunteer leaders. \nThursday\, May 25th \n6:30 – 8:00pm \nEach participant must register here: \nhttps://secure.everyaction.com/71515tLm50SsM7furN0woQ2 \nThis 90 minute online workshop will educate participants all about CUSH’s statewide parent organization Wisdom\, its connection to a host of affiliates around the state (some of them new!)\, and how we are part of the national organization Gamaliel.   \nParticipants will learn or get a refresher on how we build power around social justice issues\, why Wisdom and our affiliates (including CUSH) are some of the best stewards for social justice\, and how YOU can become part of helping us grow our critical work. \nIf we reach at least 15 CUSH participants on this call who are willing to then meet in June to discuss how we collaborate\, CUSH will throw them a pizza dinner to fuel our discussion. \nSo!  Register\, grab a friend or fellow congregant to register\, and hop on the zoom ready to learn more about building power for social justice in Kenosha and Wisconsin! \n*Need not be a member of a CUSH congregation to participate.  All who are called to build a more equitable Kenosha and Kenosha County are welcome. \n

SUMMARY:Clerk of Circuit Courts Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:Tune in Friday through the Leaders of Kenosha Facebook Page for this candidate forum\, which will be live streamed.  You will also be able to access the recording of this live stream at anytime following the forum at either the LOK or CUSH Facebook page. \nKenosha County Clerk of Circuit Courts is an important race. The League of Women Voters website defines this role for us: “The Clerk of Circuit Courts handles record keeping\, finance\, and administration for the court as well as jury management. Clerks of Circuit Courts work with all those involved in the county judicial process including judges\, county boards and the public. Voters elect the clerk of circuit court to serve a four-year term in countywide races.” \nCandidates were issued invitation to take part on Wednesday\, October 5th.\n– Rebecca Matoska Mentink confirmed that day.\n– Zach Rodriguez did not reply to that invitation (which was through an email at his campaign website.) A follow up voicemail invitation was left for him on Wednesday\, October 12\, and an email on Tuesday\, October 18th\, both to the information on the county’s candidate filing papers. As of this time\, we have not received a reply\, but we hope that Zach will attend on Friday\, as this is the only opportunity for the public to hear from both candidates together. \n– On Tuesday\, October 18th\, both candidates were emailed the Forum Guidelines\, which can be found HERE. \n
